500 Years of Italian Painting

Art Gallery of Alberta (2 Sir Winston Chruchill Square) Edmonton Alberta Tuesday, December 17, 2013 With 41 works by some of the greatest names in European art—like Giovanni Bellini, Sandro Botticelli and Titian—this exhibition examines the evolution of Italian painting, from the religious artworks of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance to neoclassical secular and genre paintings of the 19th century. This exhibition includes paintings originating from the principal artistic centres of Italy: Rome, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Siena, Naples and Venice and presents the works of famous artists alongside those of lesser-known masters. Most of the paintings have never been exhibited outside of Glasgow and many have been conserved specifically for this presentation. The AGA is the only Canadian stop on the exhibition's international tour and should not be missed! Of Heaven and Earth: 500 Years of Italian Painting from Glasgow Museums is organized by the American Federation of Arts and Glasgow Museums. The exhibition tour is generously supported by the JFM Foundation and the Donald and Maria Cox Charitable Fund. In-kind support is provided by Barbara and Richard S. Lane and Christie's.
