Royal Alberta Museum 12845 - 102 Avenue NW Ongoing through Sunday, January 6, 2013 Opening March 24 at the Royal Alberta Museum, Fashioning Feathers is a new exhibition that explores the glamour of women's feathered hats from the early twentieth century and the ecological consequences of the quest for beauty. Fashioning Feathers features many extraordinary hats from the museum's extensive Western Canadian History collection. Alongside the hats are colourful specimens of the exotic bird species whose feathers were harvested. Examples include crowned pigeons and birds-of-paradise from New Guinea and others from around the world. Based on an exhibition originally developed for the University of Alberta's Material Culture Institute, Fashioning Feathers provides visitors with the opportunity to appreciate beautiful birds and the hats their feathers adorned, while examining fashion's demands on the natural world.
