The Future All At Once

8440-112 St Edmonton, AB Saturday, June 8, 2019 The Future All At Once: The future of Indigenous representation is contemplated through a portraiture exhibition featuring Alberta's first provincial Artist in Residence, Lauren Crazybull: "When Idle No More began and Indigenous people took control of how we are represented and seen and heard, we shaped a future for ourselves. The refusal to be misrepresented has shaped the way we are witnessed now. I want to think about Indigenous Futures as a world we began shaping for ourselves in the past and how we continue to push that today. I believe that our choice to be vulnerable in our healing and uprising has created power. I kept all of these ideas in mind when creating these portraits." Lauren Crazybull is an Edmonton based Blackfoot, Dene visual artist. Lauren's work is informed, in part, by several years of justice organizing, Indigenous advocacy and tireless work as an artistic facilitator and mentor for youth throughout her home province of Alberta. For Lauren, visual art is a way of grappling with the complexities of a terrifying and beautiful world as an Indigenous woman whose existential, emotional, physical and creative freedom depends upon the world's ability to expand its understanding of justice, humanity and decolonial love. Lauren will be in residence in McMullen Gallery at the University of Alberta Hospital from July 24-26, 2019, 1-3pm daily. She will be engaging with visitors, showing off current work and will be available to talk about the exhibition. The Future All At Once runs until August 4, 2019. • Opening Reception – June 13, 7:30-9:30pm City / Town : Edmonton Event Venue : University of Alberta Neighbourhood : Garneau Short Description : The future of Indigenous representation is contemplated through a portraiture exhibition featuring Lauren Crazybull Event Category : Education, Exhibits, Free / Budget, Museums / Attractions Cost : Free Contact Name : McMullen Gallery Contact Phone : 780.407.7152 Contact Email : friendsuah@ahs.ca More info : friendsofuah.org.
