Fringe Theatre Festival 2012

Old Strathcona district and beyond Ongoing through Sunday, August 26, 2012 A multitude of bizarre and inexplicable events are afoot in Edmonton's Old Strathcona district and beyond. One thing is certain: the Fringed possess powers far beyond those of ordinary mortals, and for 31 years, they have come from around the city, the country and the globe, transfixing mild-mannered Edmontonians of all ages. With more than 1,600 performances of 220 unjuried and uncensored plays, plus busking acts, children's activities, vendors and artisans, the 2012 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival mesmerizes visitors August 16 through 26, 2012… They shall not escape The Village of The Fringed! "Now, we're not saying we have the ability to control minds like children born of a radioactive extraterrestrial event, but hundreds of thousands of Edmontonians descend on Old Strathcona each year, each bound by a common motivation: To Fringe" says Julian Mayne, Executive Director of Fringe Theatre Adventures. "Theatre has created a strange and wonderful Fringe community each August for 31 years, and this Festival seems to be an unstoppable creative force." Fringe Theatre Adventures introduces a new Festival pass initiative this year. The Frequent Fringer Festival Pass includes 10 single tickets per pass for $110, replacing Frequent Fringer and Double Fringer passes. Frequent Fringer Festival Passes, along with single tickets, are available at the Fringe Box Office at www.fringetheatre.ca August 7 at noon. A limit of two passes per person applies. By signing up for free at www.fringetheatre.ca , Villagers of The Fringed enjoy a variety of benefits including one of six collectible buttons; invitation to exclusive Villager Gatherings; insider info and offers via Villager Alert emails; and more. With a $20 contribution, Villagers upgrade their membership to Councilor, enjoy all Villager benefits, receive a free Village of the Fringed poster and program guide, and help sustain the Festival. It takes a Village… The Edmonton Fringe seeks volunteers, before and throughout the Festival, to fill positions on a variety of teams. For a minimum commitment of four shifts during the 11-day festival, Fringe volunteers receive a T-shirt, a festival loot bag, a program guide, an exclusive invite to the Festival Wrap Party, and opportunities to attend shows. The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is Canada's largest and longest-running Fringe Festival. The Edmonton Fringe doesn't jury or censor artists' work in any way and selects performances using an unbiased lottery system. Since participating artists receive 100 per cent of ticket revenue from their performances, the Fringe relies on donations from Festival patrons, public funders and business sponsors to operate. The Village of The Fringed descends on Edmonton August 16 – 26, 2012, in venues throughout Old Strathcona and beyond; further detail about this year's Festival will follow in the coming weeks.
