Environment Day 2011 Celebration

Edmonton City Hall #1 Sir Winston Churchill Square Edmonton, AB Sunday, June 5, 2011, 10am – 4pm Notes 1 - Jerusalem artichoke , Helianthus tuberosus, is a plant that grows well in poor and in fertile soils. The plant is a member of the sunflower family and a native to North America. It grows wild along river and stream banks, and in meadows and valleys. It has been cultivated as an ornamental and for its edible tubers, and has escaped to cultivated fields, fence lines, and roadsides. It is a multipurpose crop with a potential for use in the production of functional food (sugar inulin in tubers), fuel ethanol (post-harvest residues), forage (above-ground biomass), and for reclamation of post-industrial sites. Cultivation of perennial Jerusalem artichoke also presents opportunities to obtain carbon credits as this crop exhibits high abilities of carbon sequestration and long-term storage into below-ground biomass. Jerusalem artichoke is considered a nuisance even though it is sold as a specialty vegetable and as a food source for both humans and animals. In the past, it has been recommended as a forage plant, a feed for hogs, and as a leafy vegetable; at present it is also a potential source for sugar and alcohol production. However, it has not been cultivated widely in North America. 2 - Green Shopper Expo is a green event, scheduled to take place in malls, shopping centers and farmers markets across Edmonton.
