Edmonton City Centre Mall, 102 St - 102 Ave, downtown Saturday, February 5, 2011, 11am – 4pm The Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association (ECBEA) will usher in the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit by hosting its annual Chinese New Year Carnival at the beginning of February. According to the lunar-based Chinese calendar, the year will be 4709. The New Year celebration is the longest and most important on the Chinese calendar, where people in China take weeks off work to celebrate and enjoy time with family and friends. Organizers have a long list of participating stage groups from various Chinese bilingual schools, martial arts, drumming and dance groups. Performances include the traditional dragon dance, lion dances, drumming, demonstrations, costume parade, Chinese musical instruments, and colorful cultural dances. The public will enjoy hands-on activities including arts and crafts, carnival games and calligraphy, but the feature centerpiece you won’t want to miss is the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animal Mosaic Murals which took students in 12 Chinese Bilingual public schools 2 years to produce. Each of the 3456 pieces were individually painted. Each zodiac animal measures 4 ft wide by 8 ft tall. When unveiled for the first time together, it will measure almost 50 ft long. The ECBEA is the parent group that supports the Mandarin Bilingual Program in Edmonton Public Schools. Today, the program is offered at 12 Edmonton Public Schools with an active enrollment with nearly 2000 students from kindergarten to grade 12.
