The exhibition and Conversations series is a collaborative project of the University of Alberta Museums and the Canadian Circumpolar Institute, in celebration of the Canadian Circumpolar Institute’s 50th Anniversary. As we seek to understand the natural world in Canada’s Far North, we are heavily influenced by the accumulated knowledge of the region presented in a wide variety of books, articles, films and media reports. Thus we perceive the North through a series of lenses and filters provided by our own eyes and those of many others, each shaped by different historical, cultural, occupational, disciplinary, and experiential antecedents. This situation provides us with a range of different – and sometimes conflicting – perspectives to choose from -- in a region where the only constant is change and where, in recent years, change has been multiplex, rapid, and profound. Dr. Lee Foote is still in the process of grappling with the conundrums, and Dr. Milton Freeman reflects on the changes he has observed over five decades working in the North. The presentation involves the audience in a conversation the two presenters have engaged in over coffee during the past few years. Questions on the table include: how have we constructed our own perspectives on Canada’s North? What experiences have influenced our understanding? How can we improve our understanding? Quo vadis…?
